Teacher Profile

Megan Sweatman (Director / Lead Teacher Tuesday and Thursday)

I have been a teacher at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School for the past six years. I have taught Grade 1,  3,  5 and Resource. In addition I have been very involved with the extra curricular programs offered at the school; including the elementary yearly musicals, primary clubs, elementary intramural program, cross country ski program, Mother’s Day Tea and a variety of sports teams.

Prior to my time at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir, I lived in San Jose, California for two years and taught Grade 1 and Kindergarten. This school specialized in Early Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL).

I completed my Education Degree at the University of British Columbia in 2001, with a specialization in Early Literacy. During this time I taught Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2 and 3.

I have also earned a Human Kinetics Degree from the University of British Columbia, with a specialization in Health and Fitness.

However, the most valuable experience I can bring to my job is being a mother of two amazing little boys. I absolutely adore spending time with them, watching them grow and learn with each new experience. These internal rewards, keep me incredibly motivated to provide a unique and outstanding Preschool program for my children and yours.

Jennifer Reid (Support Teacher  for for all classes,  for the first 6 weeks)

My family and I have recently relocated to Calgary from Vancouver Island , British Columbia.  I am very excited to be starting my second term at Bright Stars Preschool.

Becoming a mother, five years ago, changed my priorities so I changed my career after 12 years of finance, so I could teach and care for children.  I ran a successful family day home in Comox, B.C. and have taken child care courses including Good Beginnings through the Western Canada Family Child Care Association of B.C. and the Child Development Assistant certification.

I love working with children and delight in the small moments of discovery and joy that children offer.  Your child’s well being is my priority and you can have peace of mind that I will offer your child nurturing and patient guidance while encouraging imagination and exploration through play and learning.  I look forward to getting to know all of you and your children.

Lets have fun!

Teresa Horsley (Lead Teacher Monday and Wednesday)

I graduated from the University of Calgary in 1996 with both my Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts degrees.   I have been a teacher for 8 years, 5 of which were spent teaching Grade One and Kindergarten. I was very fortunate to be mentored by an early literacy specialist, and was able to have each class of my Grade One students reading by the end of November.

Along with my early literacy knowledge, I also have strong backgrounds in music and physical education and plan to incorporate both into daily lessons.  Brain research has taught us that children learn best when lessons are personal, fun, creative, and active, so expect to see us singing, playing games and using our imaginations.

For the past few years I have been a stay-at-home Mom with my sons aged 7 and 5, and my daughter who is 3.  Having my own children has been a tremendous learning experience and has given me a great deal of insight into child development, learning styles, and the uniqueness of each child.   I have been gathering teaching ideas for the past few years and I am eager to put them into practice.  2010 / 2011 is going to be a wonderful year at Bright Stars!
